Biography

[Edit]

Known for their energetic live shows, We Are the Ocean are a British five-piece influenced by the post-hardcore sounds of Refused, Hot Water Music, and Rise Against. The London/Essex-based band, vocalist Dan Brown, guitarists Liam Cromby, and Alfie Scully, bassist Jack Spence, and drummer Tom Whittaker, formed in 2007 from the remnants of another rock outfit, Dead But Still Dreaming. After changing their name, they utilized social networking sites to build up a loyal following, which resulted in a nomination for Best British Newcomer at the Kerrang Awards before they had even put out a record. In 2008, they released their self-titled debut EP and began touring various festivals including New Jersey's The Bamboozle, and Donington Park's Download, before traveling to Baltimore to work with producer Brian McTernan (Thrice) on their debut album, Cutting Our Teeth. Following support slots with You Me at Six, Funeral for a Friend, and Lostprophets, it was released in 2010 through Hassle Records, with their second album, provisionally titled Go Now and Live, scheduled for 2011. Their second full-length Go Now and Live was released in 2011 and was produced by Pete Miles (The King Blues, Canterbury). The recording of their third record was interrupted by vocalist Dan Brown who left to concentrate the management of the band. The departure of Brown left Liam Cromby with full vocal duties on 2012 release Maybe Today, Maybe Tomorrow. The re-shuffled line-up has made a distinct style jump, with Brown’s screams and heavy riffs replaced with driving melodies and Cromby’s soaring vocals. ~ Jon O'Brien, Rovi
