Biography

[Edit]

Profoundly talented guitarist Tim Reynolds has been cutting killer riffs and spooling rock & roll with funk and soul since the age of 12. Throughout the '90s he slowly became recognized as one of the impeccable, highly skilled acoustic musicians in the areas of jazz guitar, bass, piano, sitar, mandolin, violin, and various instruments of ethnic percussion. He is an underrated master.

Born in Germany, Reynolds was a military brat who spent his young life traveling across the United States, eventually settling in Charlottesville, Virginia. He joined various psychedelic rock groups, playing heavily into his influences of Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix, and Led Zeppelin. He formed TR3 in the mid '80s, and later expanded his sound to include the influences of Bob Marley, Nine Inch Nails, and Marilyn Manson.

But Reynolds' biggest claim to fame came with his collaborations with Dave Matthews Band. He has guested on most all their releases and has joined them on countless tours across the globe. He and Matthews released the double-disc album Live at Luther College in January 1999, and Reynolds separately issued a slew of solo albums: Stream (1993), Gossip of the Neurons (1996), Sanctuary (1997), and See Into Your Soul (2000).

He released two more of his own records — Nomadic Wavelength and Stream — in 2001 while opening for the DMB and guesting during their performances. In 2003, Chaos View appeared from his T.R. Productions label. It was a jarring, futuristic, funky rock record on which he played all instruments and produced; it laid a template for what was to come with the next incarnation of his namesake trio.

In 2007, Reynolds undertook another national acoustic duo tour with Matthews that resulted in Live at Radio City. That same year, the guitarist began playing with bassist Mick Vaughn and drummer Dan Martier. They would eventually gel into a new, far more visible and stable incarnation of the TR3. Their mix of Reynolds' quirky originals and unusual versions of cover songs by James Brown, Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, and others added breadth and depth to their stage shows.

After an extended break from releasing his own records, Radiance, the studio debut from TR3, appeared in March of 2009. It was followed seven months later by the solo Parallel Universe. He and Matthews undertook another acoustic tour later in the year, resulting in 2010's Live in Las Vegas.

The TR3 began touring almost nonstop at the end of that year, recording every show. A double-length concert set, From Space and Beyond, appeared in June of 2011; it resulted in even more road time. Reynolds took almost no time off, playing solo shows and duos with Matthews between runs.

In early 2014, TR3 signed to ATO Records, and in August, the pre-release single "All Over the Place" appeared. The full-length Like Some Kind of Alien Invasion appeared in October 2014. ~ MacKenzie Wilson & Thom Jurek, Rovi
