Biography

[Edit]

Born in Montreal, Quebec, Rick Fielding fell for the music of legends Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie, and Bill Monroe, and after several attempts at a more conventional living, took to being a full-time folk singer. Relocating to Toronto in 1969, Fielding quickly established himself on the Canadian folk scene, becoming a contemporary of Tom Paxton, Ian and Silvia, and Gordon Lightfoot, among others. Being a masterful interpreter of contemporary and traditional forms — including country, folk, traditional ballads, and even serving a stint in the Gangreen Boys, one of Toronto's first bluegrass groups — Fielding is also an award winning songwriter, accompanying his smooth baritone on guitar, banjo, mandolin, autoharp, and dobro. Having recorded the well-received Lifeline for Folk Legacy in 1995, Fielding gained a wider audience while playing festivals and folk clubs in the United States. This One's The Dreamer followed in 1999 on the Borealis Recording Company label and was a pleasantly eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary elements. Currently residing in Ontario, Canada, Fielding runs musical workshops and hosts the Acoustic Workshop radio show on CIUT-FM 85.5.
