Biography

[Edit]

Celtic harpist Lorin Grean was not born to the Celtic harp, but her house was filled with music. Her father worked with the Glenn Miller band and then ran the East Coast office of RCA records. Grean's sister Robin was a backup singer and was in the original Broadway cast of Jesus Christ Superstar. Meanwhile, Grean shyly sat in her bedroom playing her guitar.

In the early 1980s, Grean joined Salt on the Rug, an alternative Celtic band that was ahead of its time in blending Celtic music with other styles, namely jazz and Native American percussion. Here, Grean sang and played recorders and mountain dulcimer. In the late '80s, Grean brought home her first Celtic harp and quickly learned the instrument. Between 1990 and 1994, Grean performed with Moving Breath, a 5-member women's band. Grean recorded two vocal-harp albums, Embrace and The Call, on her Knockinclash Productions label. She has recorded vocals, harp, and recorder with Kate Wolf, Ronnie Gilbert, Tommy Makem, Kenny Loggins, Earl Robinson, comedian Robert Schimmel, and James Donnellan and Bill Robe.

In 1997, she released her innovative harp album (with top backup artists) Hand Woven on the Silver Wave label.
