One of many regulars at Smalls in New York City, alto saxophonist Zaid Nasser makes his long-awaited recording debut as a leader on this impressive session. Supported by pianist Sacha Perry, bassist Ari Roland, and drummer Phil Stewart, all of whom have regularly worked together, Nasser has a fresh sound on his instrument, with a dark, mournful tone that isn't readily comparable to any bopper. He sounds nothing like the legendary Johnny Hodges playing timeless ballads like "Warm Valley" and "Sophisticated Lady" from the vast Duke Ellington songbook, adding a soulful touch to the former and opening the latter accompanied solely by Roland's ominous walking bass. The originals are also of high caliber. Nasser's driving "Junior's Soul" is an obvious but potent reworking of the standard "Body and Soul," while "Escape for New York" is a breezy hard bop vehicle. "Chinatown, My Chinatown" has long fallen out of favor as an ancient relic to most modern boppers, but Nasser's powerful interpretation demonstrates there's plenty of life remaining in this chestnut from the era of Art Tatum; Perry's inventive solo recalls Bud Powell at the top of his powers. Highly recommended.
