Onetime prodigy Yo-Yo Ma was four years old when he started playing these suites, and he initially captured them on tape in his mid-20s. (He recorded them again in 1997 for his Inspired by Bach project.) It’s both fascinating and informative to listen back on his interpretations, which were released as he began to solo with the world’s great orchestras under the direction of the finest conductors and partner with the likes of pianist Emmanuel Ax, a Julliard classmate. Ma won his first of many GRAMMYs® for the complete recording of Bach’s solo cello suites, and with good reason. The first is the most familiar, with Ma’s joie de vivre bursting through. He navigates the atypical tuning of “No. 5” with a professorial authority, while the also-challenging “No. 6” (written for a now-defunct five-stringed instrument) sounds tender throughout in his more-than-capable care.
