On this Instrumental Best album the world finally gets to see Yngwie Malmsteen at his finest. No vocals about dragons, fire, ice, or any other subject du jour. No lead singer howling like a banshee trying to share airtime with the royal furor of guitar acrobatics. This time around we see the most important aspects of Malmsteen: his guitar playing and his ego. This is just Yngwie for Yngwie's sake, taking bits and pieces of his greats guitar stunts and putting them together on one accessible disc for his die-hard fans. Guitar students will froth at the mouth and attempt to play some of these songs back at half speed just to learn and understand what he's doing and how he's doing it, but that's about as far as Yngwie goes in the substance department. The rest of the album's production is surrounded by fluff, giving off the feeling that if he had his druthers about the subject it would just be the sound of his guitar on this record and nothing else. Ostentatious and grandstanding, Instrumental Best is only for those who are deep die-hard devotees of this Swedish metal deity.
