Tom Roberts and Jamie Odell have succeeded in forging their own niche of funked electronic grooves at Freerange, with the imprint's first album featuring the talents of Manchester-based multi-instrumentalists Mark Wadsworth and Sam Kynaston. As opposed to the fusion of Odell's own Jimpster project or the song-based structure employed by labelmates Marasma, Yennah has a tendency to lean more toward jazz. Utilizing a wealth of nimble percussion programming to straddle a breadth of tempo ranging from the strolling beats of "Fish and Fusion" to the almost drum'n'bass of "Kiplata," the pair wields big arrangements and an array of abstract sonics to keep the beats in check, with freewheeling woodwinds forever at the front of the musical charge. An accomplished debut.
