[Edit]Overall, Wynton Marsalis' three-part Soul Gestures in Southern Blue (of which this CD is the final section) is a rather weird tribute to the blues, although the individual solos are fine. Actually, the main significance to this particular set is that the trumpeter had for the first time put together the nucleus to his septet. Although there was no trombonist yet, altoist Wessell Anderson, tenor saxophonist Todd Williams, bassist Reginald Veal, and drummer Herlin Riley were already in place while pianist Marcus Roberts was still a part of Marsalis' group.
