Wagner’s Ring of the Nibelung (known simply as The Ring Cycle or The Ring) is considered the “opus magnum” of classical music for good reason: with over 100 musicians, 34 soloists and 16 hours of music, it was intended as a four-night performance. Using Germanic mythology, Wagner critically examines human society in his quintessential Romantic “Gesamtkunstwerk,” or “Complete Work of Art.” Recorded between 1958 and 1965 by Sir Georg Solti and the Vienna Philharmonic, the first-ever complete recording of The Ring is regarded as the pinnacle of interpretations, crowded with larger-than-life “Wagnerian voices” that many say no longer exist. This album of highlights from the The Ring is taken from the complete, 16-hour version.
