The musical world has never seen a prodigy quite like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), a playful genius who wrote an array of symphonies, operas and chamber music—all before his 36th birthday. Mozart penned his first piano concerto at age 11, but two of his most famous, Concerto No. 20 and Concerto No. 21, were written in 1785. Austrian pianist Friedrich Gulda has a definitive way with these pieces, combining stern rhythmic precision and the poetic, bittersweet atmosphere of Vienna. On these landmark recordings from 1974 and 1975 he is accompanied by the Vienna Philharmonic under Claudio Abbado, and the sparkling results have never been duplicated.
