Wayfarer’s debut EP, The River, applies a luminous folk-rock sound to classic hymns with striking results. The Seattle-based group (the brainchild of ex-Sherwood guitarist Dan Koch) adheres closely to the traditional lyrics of these church favorites while taking creative license with the melodies. Closely matched vocal harmonies and nuanced instrumental work often bring Fleet Foxes to mind, though The Beach Boys seem to be a pronounced influence as well (especially on the closing track, “When I Approach My God”). Koch’s sweet, guileless singing stands at the center of delicate fingerpicked electric guitars, phantom pianos, and echoing percussion. “Alas and Did My Saviour Bleed” and “Shall We Gather at the River” stand out for their cathedral-like grandeur and awestruck tones. “How Long (Love Constrained to Obedience)” and “Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me” are more sparse and rock-tinted; “What Wondrous Love Is This?” lets the band stretch out on a long, contemplative finale. The River can be appreciated as contemporary church music, but it also can be enjoyed for the sheer beauty of its language and the luster of its sound.
