While The First Sessions have nothing to do with the Warren Zevon that appeared in 1976 with a self-titled album of Los Angeles rock, it does feature early recordings that possess their own obvious charms. The demo cover of  “I’ve Just Seen a Face” and the studio take of Bob Dylan’s “If You Gotta Go, Go Now” are novelties worth hearing. As tunes, “Follow Me” and “Like the Seasons” are attractive folk-rock. “(You Used To) Ride So High,” recorded as the Motorcycle Abilene, is a curious piece that sounds like something the Chocolate Watchband might record (a compliment!). “Outside Chance” is the tune Zevon wrote for the Turtles. “I See the Lights” is an unreleased demo that is an intriguing tune with a voice that is hard to imagine as Warren Zevon’s; it’s so different from what we know. “And If I Had You,” another unreleased demo, is a brilliant ballad. The final two lyme & cybelle tracks are after Zevon left the group. This may not be the Zevon people know, but it’s pretty cool music, nonetheless.
