A refreshing change from all the hits comps that get cranked out of the Nashville assembly line, Vince Gill’s Love Songs makes good on the title by thematically focusing on the serenades and ballads that have wooed his fans from 1990 to 2006. Since these selections were written, cherry-picked and sequenced by Gill himself, Love Songs plays with the cohesive arc of a full-length album, rather than a random collage. The opening “One” from Let’s Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye sets an enamoring tone with acoustic guitars, spare drumming, light keyboard touches and subtly tasteful leads from what sounds like an old Fender Telecaster. His duet on “Faint of Heart” with GRAMMY-award-winning singer and pianist Diana Krall is a classy affair trimmed with all the trappings of a slow-burning jazz number, yet the elegant and sophisticated performance keeps the number from sounding loungy. The sublime Americana flourishes and timelessly twangy tones on “The Only Love” vaguely recall Gill’s tenure in ‘70s country-rock band Pure Prairie League.
