Is it possible that Scott Weiland can hold together what Axl Rose could not? For their second album, Velvet Revolver sound very much like a band that understands how to work together. As lead singer, Weiland brings an authoritative spark, while Guns n' Roses alumni, guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Matt Sorum push forth the punkish ends of their roots, pummeling through the riffage to deliver steamrolling, ragged-on-the-edges hard rock (“Let It Roll,” “American Man”). Producer Brendan O’Brien keeps things tight and focused. Velvet Revolver sound like a veteran act effortlessly spitting out the hard rock playbook with strong new maneuvers. An ELO cover of “Can’t Get It Out of My Head” hints at the pop attributes that the band incorporate into their own writing. “Mary Mary” gives Slash a few spots to sport his leadwork, but it’s back to Weiland for the churning chorus before the four and a half minutes are up.
