This 1980 album wasn't the first time Todd Rundgren paid tribute to The Beatles; he had covered a few of their tunes on 1976's Faithful. But Utopia spend the entirety of Deface the Music paying painstakingly precise homage to the Fab Four. There are no actual Beatles songs, but every track emulates the Liverpudlian legends' sound as closely as possible, from the harmonies to the guitar riffs. The task is tackled in roughly chronological fashion—the album kicks off with "I Just Want to Touch You" evoking early Merseybeat. And by the closing cut, "Everybody Else Is Wrong," Utopia have adopted the Fabs' Mellotron-soaked, late-'60s psychedelic style.
