Despite lineup changes and years of uncertainty, Uriah Heep soldiers on as an unstoppable hard rock juggernaut, sticking to its unique mix of heavy guitars and brooding keyboards some 40 years since its inception. Founding guitarist Mick Box ensures the band plays it the right way. Recorded on a tour in support of its Wake the Sleeper release (an album that shows the band in rejuvenated form), Live in Armenia takes the band for the first time into the former Soviet republic to perform for a crowd eager to rock. Vocalist Bernie Shaw is a pure hard rock singer, able to nail Heep classics such as “July Morning,” “Look at Yourself,” “Stealin’,” “Gypsy," and “Easy Livin’” with David Byron's authority. Seven of the songs are tracks from Uriah Heep's latest album, which starts with classic sounds and adds metal overtones. “Angels Walk with You” evokes memories of the group's early-'70s splendor while the guitars jut forward. “Shadow” uses tribal grooves and vocals to create its spell.
