Three's Co.

The Tyde’s third album is rife with pop culture references. Aptly titled Three’s Co. after the sitcom that took place in Venice Beach, the opening “Do It Again Again” points fun at Steely Dan while sounding like a refined version of music from The Tyde's earlier album, Twice. Here and throughout Three’s Co., frontman Darren Rademaker has reined in his nasal inflections for a more hushed vocal approach. The following “Brock Landers” uses Mark Wahlberg’s protagonist from the 1997 film Boogie Nights for both the song’s title and the Wahlberg-quoted refrain “Jealousy will get you nowhere.” Where Twice flowed with mellow moods and soft tones, Three’s Co. rocks with a stronger bite and louder guitars, digging deeper into Southern California surf culture. That’s not to say Rademaker and company have abandoned their softer side. But even in the watery warmth of “The Lamest Shows,” the absence of Ben Knight’s ice-pick guitar leads is replaced with Rademaker’s pointed lyrical jabs. In the post-shoegaze ambience of “Don’t Need a Leash,” he likens a surfboard’s tether cord to a constricting relationship.
