Turbo Fruits

If Be Your Own Pet’s manic, youthful energy wears you out a bit, this side project by BYOP vocalist Jonas Stein and drummer John Eatherley might provide the breathing space you need. Where BYOP merely provides hints of downtime, Turbo Fruits take liberally from the MC5, Black Sabbath and the Stooges playbooks to infuse heavy, head-banging guitar thrash with the kind of pacing and structure that allows the chaos to be crafted into fully-formed songs with clever, agile hooks;  waves of sweaty, metal-punk-blues noise wash over the listener, propelled by rhythm and melody directed with clear purpose. “No Drugs to Use” is pretty much unintelligible but you sing along anyway, drummer Turbo Max (Peebles) bashing away with precision and power. “Volcano” starts as a slow, Sabbath-y dirge, and builds to a bluesy, fuzzed-out joy-ride, while “Ramblin Rose” tries to snatch the crown from Wolf Mother and the White Stripes for Best ‘70s Rock Vocal Impersonation. “Poptart” reaches for the deepest bottom it can find in the bass, and less than two minutes later morphs into the slithery “I’m Excited,” full of slippery guitars and, one assumes, hormone-driven hope for a fulfilling end.  Suffice to say, Iggy would be proud of this young trio.
