The debut album by San Francisco's the Tramps is strictly old-school garage punk that sounds like the whole insipid school of pseudo-punk that sprang up in Green Day's wake never existed. Sprinting through 14 songs in just under 28 minutes, each track is breathless punk with just enough pop hooks to keep it out of unintelligible hardcore territory. (Think of a cross between the Ramones and pre-Henry Rollins Black Flag, with just a hint of the first Squirrel Bait album.) Lyrically, things are in the goofy mood so prevalent in '70s punk, with song topics including "Back Seat Baby," "Bad Ass Honey," and the ever-popular "Nerd Love," all of them delivered in a joyously bratty whine for minimum intelligibility and maximum fun. The Tramps is a spirited reminder that punk rock can be fun and silly without being moronic and/or misogynistic.
