Since the early ‘90s, singer Tracy Byrd has scored a more-than-respectable series of hits without ever quite entering the country superstar ranks. His brawny delivery and generally affable demeanor makes it easy for him to sell a song. This greatest hits album combines tracks from his RCA releases with re-recordings of three hits from his MCA days, along with two previously unheard tunes. The remake of 1995’s “Keeper of the Stars” is a winner, as is the brand-new “Johnny Cash” (a celebration of the rebel spirit as much as a tribute to the Man in Black). Tracks like “Just Let Me Be In Love” and “Put Your Hand In Mine” reaffirm Byrd’s easy-going suavity as a balladeer. “The Truth About Men” and “Ten Rounds With Jose Cuervo” show some genuine wit, but the overemphasis on drinking and carousing songs ultimately dulls their appeal. Tracy Byrd can deliver the goods all right, and the strongest moments on this album suggest he could aim still higher.
