What can you say about Too $hort that hasn't already been said? The man basically invented pimp-rap, drawing from his Oakland upbringing and creating his own sub-genre that has since been co-opted by everyone from Snoop Dogg to Jay-Z to Suga Free. He went from making custom raps for locals to selling tapes out of his trunk to major label deals and world tours. He has also spread the wealth, discovering other Bay Area acts like Spice1 and the Pack, and he continues to do outreach work in the community. Respect the Pimpin’ is (at least) his 19th solo release, and sounds exactly like what you would expect/hope for in a new Too $hort record. His beats are a perfect fusion of languid guitars, syrupy keyboards, deep low-end, and simple but dope drum hits. Twenty-five years after his debut, $hort Dog is still going strong. Check out "That's Not Your B*tch," "Y'all Ready," and "B*tches Need Love Too."
