A landmark album on every level, Vibes of the Times announced the arrival of "conscious" dancehall and Tony Rebel, along with Garnett Silk, as its leading proponent. Armed with songs produced by legendary reggae producers Sly Dunbar, Steely & Clevie and Donovan Germaine, which shone with Biblical references and hopeful messages, this album lifted the genre up from the dominant muck of gun and sex lyrics and pointed it in a more positive direction. Using his pioneering "sing-jay" style, Rebel showcased his DJ and crooning skills on the classics "Chatty Chatty," "One Day" and "Sweet Jamaica." Guest appearances by Diana King and Garnett Silk add to the record's melodic sound. Released in 1993, when dancehall was still relatively new and spewing with arrogance, Vibes of the Times stands as an important symbol of what dancehall can aspire to.
