The 1968 set Snowfall is far more than an obligatory holiday release from a legendary singer. Teaming with British arranger/composer Robert Farnon, Tony Bennett brings a warmth and emotional commitment to these familiar tunes, lending them a unique luster. With his customary ability to personalize a song lyric, he makes “The Christmas Song,” “White Christmas,” “Winter Wonderland,” and other Yuletide standards feel immediate and vital. “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” is rendered with good humor and a hint of sophisticated swing, while a medley of tunes that includes “Silent Night” and “O Come All You Faithful” deftly blends smoothness with reverence. From the big-band panache of “My Favorite Things” to the title number's dreamy impressionism, Farnon surrounds Bennett with a pleasing variety of instrumental textures and colors. Bennett puts his heart into these performances, keeping his vocals intimate even as the arrangements swell and sparkle. Snowfall is both an enduring Christmas classic and an album for all seasons. (The 1994 reissue of Snowfall includes a live take of Tony and his jazz trio performing “I’ll Be Home for Christmas" on The Jon Stewart Show.)
