So what makes this Thin Lizzy compilation special? For starters, it contains the posthumous title track. The band got back together five years after Phil Lynott’s untimely 1986 passing to finish a song that he'd started. Lynott had recorded a demo for “Dedication” in 1985 on an old eight-track; he sang and played bass. In 1991, Scott Gorham and Brian Downey added guitar and drum parts, and it sounds like they played to the best of their ability here. The anthemic “Dedication” bookends this collection—and gives deep insight to the greatness Thin Lizzy might have achieved had Lynott triumphed over his demons. The rest of Dedication—The Very Best of Thin Lizzy delivers a generous offering of 17 other songs, mostly harvested from the band’s earlier catalog. The full version of “Whiskey in a Jar” opens, setting the stage for such fan favorites as the smooth “Dancing in the Moonlight” and the definitive version of Bob Seger’s “Rosalie.”
