[Edit]Based in El Cerrito, Calif., the unassuming Down Home Records may not look like much on the outside. But it's here that Chris Strachwitz has run the Arhoolie Records label for the last 50 years, releasing (and in some cases producing) hundreds of albums across genres as diverse as protest folk, norteñjo, blues, New Orleans jazz, Tex-Mex, and everything in between. In 2013, over the course of three days, Arhoolie artists from around the world converged in Berkeley to celebrate the label's legacy, and this compilation is the result. Featuring an impossibly diverse lineup, including Woodstock folk provocateur Country Joe MacDonald, blues adventurer Taj Mahal, gonzo guitarist Ry Cooder, and many, many more, the album is a once-in-a-lifetime document containing 70 live tracks. While they span genres and eras, they manage to fit perfectly under a single banner: Arhoolie.
