Together with Ruby & the Romantics (“Our Day Will Come”), the Tymes were practitioners of the “lounge soul” subgenre, which flourished briefly in 1963. This quintet’s hits, “So Much in Love” and “Wonderful! Wonderful!” (a version of Johnny Mathis’ 1957 chart debut), pioneered an airy sort of R&B-lite which the group effortlessly replicated on a klatch of standards covers and originals. The same finger-snaps-and-“ooh-we-ooh” arrangements animate “Somewhere,” “Wonderland of Love,” and “The Lamp Is Low.” “Chances Are” revisits the Johnny Mathis catalog, while “Here She Comes” bumps up the rhythm to a mid-tempo Impressions gait.
