With a cover that looks uncannily like a small-time D.I.Y. indie release from 1982 (dorky fashion sense and all), the Triggers' debut album playfully re-examines the goofier side of early-'80s new wave rock. Songs like the braying, downright silly "I Don't Wash My Hands" and the B-52's-meet-the Cramps rocker "Let's Mutate" have all the kicky male-female vocals, futuristic accents, and Ramones-inspired bubble-punk guitars one could want. The songs are somewhat uneven, but the longest of these 12 songs doesn't even come near the three-minute mark — the whole record is over in just about 25 and a half minutes — and so they win points for brevity. Highlights include the chaotic, 99-second blast "It's It" and "Clones," which recalls very early Devo in its sneering tone and blunt delivery, but just about every song on the album has some element to commend it. Re-creating the early '80s may not be the best option for a long-term career, but Shoot Your Mouth Off is an entertaining bit of faux-nostalgia.
