Perhaps because it embraced elements of Vegas-style performance practice, The Spinners’ 1975 concert album isn't awarded the same amount of interest or respect as similarly minded albums from soul music's golden era. Recorded March 5, 1975, at the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill, N.J., The Spinners: Live epitomizes the sophisticated supper-club entertainment that a certain segment of upwardly mobile African-Americans embraced in the mid-'70s. The Latino Casino was considered one of the East Coast's fanciest, hippest nightclubs, and it says a lot about The Spinners’ stature that they headlined the venue at the peak of its acclaim. Certainly, the word that comes to mind when listening to this live album is “class.” Songs like “Living a Little Laughing a Little,” “Sadie," and “Mighty Love” are well suited to this environment. It’s also affirming to see that the group’s billowing harmonies aren't merely the product of studio wizardry, as evidenced by a downright luscious rendition of “How Could I Let You Get Away.”
