Just as artists such as Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Prince overflow with material, Billy Corgan is another prolific writer whose official albums only tell a part of the story. Pisces Iscariot was released after just two Smashing Pumpkins studio albums -- Gish, Siamese Dream -- had been issued. For a collection of studio outtakes and European B-sides, it plays surprisingly cohesively. It is as essential as their "official" studio albums from this era. The demo of "Soothe" is a mediative, acoustic demo. "Whir" brings the band together for an acoustic-guitar-based tune that highlights the group's psychedelic dream-pop side. "Starla" is an epic and breathtaking guitar battle that's pure Guitar Hero, with Corgan living out his childhood fantasies as a 1970s hard rocker. Eric Burdon and the Animals' "A Girl Named Sandoz" is whipped into a frenzy, while Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" expresses its passions subtly. The band's beauty grows deeper with age. (The 2012 Deluxe Edition includes 17 unreleased or alternate versions of tunes from the 1990s.)
