Issued on New Year’s Day 2008 as a digital-only EP, American Gothic offers further evidence that Billy Corgan was feeling recharged with 2007’s Zeitgeist and had more material than he could put in one place. The four songs here represent different sides of Corgan's music, with “The Rose March” an acoustic-led track worthy of T Rex’s Marc Bolan. “Again, Again, Again (The Crux)” is a near-jangly pop song done in Corgan’s idiosyncratic way. “Pox” hits a hard rock funk that lands in that alt-rock sweet spot that defined the '90s, complete with near-dissonant harmonies. “Sunkissed,” another psychedelic folk song with tripped-out keyboards, horns, and electricity, fills out this side trip through Corgan’s more reflective (but no less inventive) side.
