Arrica Rose & the …’s sophomore album was crafted from slow-burning folk-pop enveloped in surfy guitar tones of the West Coast. “Everybody” sets the tone with a Byrds-like 12-string jangle chiming through gauzy reverb as Rose sings with a sleepy cool. “Sail Away” approximates setting out on calm waters with ear-massaging tremolo effects and other shimmering guitar work that undulates as Rose’s inflections simmer down to a near whisper. She picks up the pace a bit on “We Made Out Alright,” where her slightly raspy inflections inadvertently sound like Jesse Sykes singing mellow surf rock of the ‘60s. The slightly playful “Summer’s Gonna Burn Me (So Are You)” boasts a sublime string section and what could be a lazy New Orleans horn section playing with dipsomaniacal abandon. Closing on a curious medley of “Video Killed The Radio Star” and “What A Wonderful World,” Let Alone Sea is a constant treat of tranquil elegance.
