The Rubble Collection, Vol. 5—The Electric Crayon Set is regarded by enthusiasts of '60s British psychedelia as the best compilation in the 10-volume series. It opens with The Poets’ “That’s The Way It’s Gotta Be”: a perfect (and danceable) hybrid of modish Merseybeat and pre-psychedelic freakbeat. The Attack’s “Anymore Than I Do” is a similarly groovy single that’s rife with muscled guitar riffs and an infectious backbeat. The Flies’ trippy cover of “I’m Not Your Stepping Stone” makes The Monkees’ version sound like The Brady Bunch in comparison, while The Game’s “Gotta Wait” is somehow as catchy as it is demure. Before they formed The Creation, singer Kenny Pickett and guitarist Eddie Phillips played in an equally cool beat band known as The Mark Four. Two of that group's rare singles surface here—first the subdued and haunting “I’m Leaving” and then the more pop-oriented “Hurt Me (If You Will).” But it’s Fire’s “Father’s Name Is Dad” that proves to be the catchiest tune here. It grooves on Beatlesque guitars and harmonies but stands out with innovative power-pop melodies.
