The organic sound of The Roots benefits here from herbal supplements like the guitar and the addition of lyricist Dice Raw. Things Fall Apart works cohesively when the lyrical content steps in sync with the overall theme. The duet with Erykah Badu ("You Got Me") is sweet as its message is strong. The collaboration with Common ("The Love of My Life") is powerful both lyrically and sonically (with Zap Mama fluttering in the background), but most of all psychologically. "Dynamite," "Double Trouble," and "Don't See Us" are all classic gas-pedal-mashed-to-the-floor Roots. Philly's finest always catch flack for not reproducing on record what they do live. This album is their convincing rebuttal.
