With a voice that’s entrancing and fragile, wobbly and precise, Heidi Spencer imprints heavy emotion onto these self-penned tunes that slip just outside the parameters of folk, pop and Americana. The broken heart of “Alibi” leads to the casual flow of “Under Streetlight Glow” where she whistles her way to work. The Milwaukee songwriter is finally getting the attention she deserves with her third album, a highlight of 2011. The simple, economic arrangements are a particular strength. Acoustic guitars and pianos kept in service to the songs allow the listener to hear the beautiful trail-off in Spencer’s voice and the sweet empathy in the harmonies between her and Renee Hendrix. “Moth Met Spider” is a gentle piece where the whole group plays like a band trying not to wake the neighbors, while “Carry Me Softly” strips things down to acoustic guitar. “Hibernation” sweeps towards high-lonesome country. “Go To France” shuffles towards country-rock. This edition of the album includes the bonus tracks, “Nebraska” and “I Slept In Cars,” two songs of luminous sadness and flickering hope.
