Obscure and underappreciated, the riff-heavy grooves of A-Nal-Y-Sis make it a crate-digger's gold mine. From the opening trumpet and screaming vocal collision of "Serenade for Jive Turkey" it's plainly obvious that the New Birth's backing band, the Nite-Liters, were wilder then the average bunch when they had the freedom to jam out. And they do jam out. They're comparable to the JB's, or the Meters, but on another level, their sound is jazzy, even though it's too aggressive and groove-centered to be filed under jazz, and it's funky, but it's way more choppy and action-packed than your average party funk release. Consider it thinking-man's funk. A heavy, stone-cold rollick from start to finish, this, their last record, could be considered the best work of their career. Definitely a good starting point for the uninitiated. [Thankfully, Dusty Groove reissued this release on CD in 2009.]
