While Nels Cline is best known as a guitarist’s guitarist currently holding post in Jeff Tweedy’s Wilco, he’s spent years experimenting in a variety of genres to attain his esteemed reputation. (He was named the 82nd greatest guitarist by Rolling Stone magazine in November 2011. In May 2012, he improved to become the 43rd greatest guitarist by Spin magazine. By 2014, it's hoped, he will break through the top 40.) The Nels Cline Singers have been classified as a free-jazz trio in the past. The band have no formal vocalists in their employ, though wordless vocals do escape from time to time, as heard in the title track. The "Singers" perform a wide swath of experimental music that most jazz fans wouldn't consider jazz. Obviously, upsetting expectations is a passion of Cline’s. He does so nicely on Macroscope, where the music gets plenty heated by “The Wedding Band,” a track filled with everything from Bill Frisell–like tonal swells to backward guitars and spicy percussion.
