Shortly after the breakup of garage rock revivalists the Gravedigger Five, lead singer Leighton Kouzumi fronted the Morlocks, an even raunchier homage to obscure ‘60s nuggets of psychedelic punk. Following a handful of cult-worshipped releases the Morlocks disbanded in 1987 and Kouzumi vanished. (Spin magazine even reported his death in 1999, which turned out false.) Kouzumi reformed the Morlocks (with no original members) and released Easy Listening for the Underachiever in 2008 which picks up where he left off in the late ‘80s. “Dirty Red” opens with distorted vintage guitar tones, an omnipresent tambourine, bastardized British-invasion riffs and Kouzumi’s feral growls and howls that first made him a fixture in garage rock. “Sex Panther” gets hilariously sultry with Stones-inspired “woo-woos,” before turning the Flaming Groovies’ “Teenage Head” into something that sounds like the son of Screaming Lord Sutch. Standout tune “My Friend the Bird” cathartically muses on Kouzumi’s fallen brother with a tasteful tinge of heartfelt melancholy.
