The '90s were filled with melodic, guitar-based pop bands that could do somber and ebullient with equal authority. The Mommyheads were such a group; they vaulted from indie to major labels without losing their character. However, the band fell victim to label politics and broke up soon after its Don Was–produced, self-titled major-label debut. The death of original drummer Jan Kotik inspired the group to re-form in his memory, and The Mommyheads have since rediscovered their band chemistry with several encouraging releases. The bonus track "No One Gives a Damn About Your Band" is a succinct, humorous, and all-too-true account of a musician's life. "On a Clear Night" shows that The Mommyheads can expand their talents beyond basic instrumentation, with intelligent harmonies, crafted keyboard lines, and guitar leads that are far beyond traditional. The dreamlike quality of "Medicine Show," the grinding bass guitar of "Skinny White Uptight," and the Travis-like pop of "Right Where They Should Be" are among the band's strongest material.
