[Edit]When paired with The M Machine’s preceding 2012 EP, Metropolis, Pt. I, this six-song sequel completes a two-part conceptual album that transcends genres. The San Francisco trio The M Machine was so inspired by Fritz Lang’s pioneering 1927 film Metropolis that it went about writing a mythology for the story, set to its own electronically animated recordings. A near period-correct piano opens “The Palace” as if contributing to the silent film’s original score before white-hot synthesizer tones take over, sounding touched by the hands of Daft Punk's robots. This shapeshifts into some stop-start rhythms blasting underneath hints of Skrillex-flavored dubstep; over this, guest vocalist Pennybirdrabbit sings a sci-fi narrative with her otherworldly inflections. Save for some '80s neon-hued electro-pop flourishes, the aptly titled “Ghosts in the Machine” is a more haunting composition, with gloomy minor chords and Pennybirdrabbit’s doubled vocals pumped through eerie reverb effects. Hints of the soundtrack to the original 1982 sci-fi film Tron pulse and drone in the outstanding “Tiny Anthem.”
