In the early days of compact discs, record companies were sheepish to push the limits of how much music could fit on a single disc and were equally worried that fans of modest means who would buy a two-LP set wouldn’t necessarily buy a pricier two-CD set. Therefore, eight of the 29 classic Jam songs that appeared on the two-LP version of Snap! were cut to make a 66-minute single-CD collection. Even though several great songs were cut for Compact Snap!, it includes all the rarities that made the original album a serious draw for any Jam fan. (The full version can now be purchased as the uncut Snap!, since digital downloads have no limits.) Here, among 11 other hits, we get the demo version of “That’s Entertainment”; the single versions of “‘A’ Bomb in Wardour Street,” “Smither-Jones,” and “Start!”; the single edits of “Down in the Tube Station at Midnight,” “The Eton Rifles," and “Precious”; the censored version of “The Modern World”; the single mix of “David Watts”; and the remixed version of “Funeral Pyre.”
