The Isleys had previously incorporated rock values with everything from Stephen Stills and Carole King covers to the funky breakbeat classic “Get Into Something,” but it was 1973’s 3 + 3 that really took them into new territory. The official addition of siblings Ernie and Marvin and cousin Chris Jasper to the lineup brought fresh sonics; Ernie’s whirring, screaming guitar was to prove as indelible a signature as Ronald’s lead vocals. “That Lady” put him front and center on an update of an old single that ended up one of the sexiest of their uptempo jams. James Taylor (“Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight”) and Seals & Crofts (“Summer Breeze”) fit in with the guys’ own mellow grooves (“You Walk Your Way,” “If You Were There”). Along with Stevie Wonder and Earth, Wind & Fire, the Isley Brothers were regular visitors to the top end of the mainstream album charts in the ’70s; 3 + 3 marked the beginning of that trend. This remastered edition contains a live take on “That Lady.”
