The original three-LP live album Europe '72 is among the most important albums in The Grateful Dead's catalog. Its sprawling length declared, once and for all, that the Dead were primarily a live band in much the same way a jazz band is never entirely defined by its studio releases. Of course, the ensuing years led to an explosion of authentic live albums that documented nearly every inch of the group's live output. However, there was something special about the Dead's 1972 spring tour, and throwing together a second set that carefully avoids repeating any tunes is a difficult but worthy task. Obviously, the first volume should be acquired for its essentials. But this set includes such a sweet improvisation of "Dark Star/Drums/The Other One" that it could break your heart (if not your mind) after its 52-minute length. That it segues into a gorgeous 11-minute trek through Merle Haggard's "Sing Me Back Home" at another concert in England from later that month (May 1972) illustrates how focused the group was during this tour.
