Let's face it: they may have still been capable of reaching great heights in the '90s, but the GratefulDead's best days were clearly behind them. That said, the addition of Bruce Hornsby in the fall of 1990gave the band a swift kick in the pants for a bit. Hornsby's jazz-influenced acoustic piano gave the sound a new dimension, but equally as important, it was a great motivator for Jerry Garcia. Hornsby became Garcia's personal foil, a chance to bounce ideas off a sympathetic and talented partner. (That's not to say his other band mates weren't sympathetic and talented, just not new.) On this September 1991 show, Hornsby's flowering improvisations help distinguish "Help on the Way," "Slipknot," "Franklin's Tower," and "Terrapin Station," while "Dire Wolf" lets him feed his country jones. The set adds two songs from a March set in Greensboro, North Carolina, including a hypnotic 23-minute reading of "Eyes of the World." Hornsby's departure in 1992 deprived the band of a much-needed catalyst, as this recording makes clear.
