The true history of rock ’n’ roll isn’t just told on the charts but in the word-of-mouth underground, where the bands who inspired future generations often remain little-known or unknown. The Gories were a garage band from Detroit, with two guitars, no bass, and a drummer who never unraveled all the mysteries of Keith Moon but who tried anyhow. As payback for their inspiring shows and their few studio records (which The White Stripes’ Jack White clearly learned quite a bit from), White’s label Third Man Records has issued this "bootleg quality" live album from 1988, where The Gories are rocking out to a select audience of observers. In future years, Gories members would go onto The Dirtbombs, The Demolition Doll Rods, and Danny & The Darleens. Here, their manic intensity (as shown on a cover of “Real Cool Time” by their fellow Detroit rockers The Stooges) guides them throughout the set, with a primitive awesomeness that sounds easy to do but is impossible to replicate.
