The Go-Go’s debut album, Beauty and the Beat, presented everything that was fun about new-wave rock ‘n’ roll in one sweet package. These are pop songs that are smart and savvy, tuneful and tough. “Our Lips Are Sealed” and “We Got the Beat” dominated radio, while tracks such as “Lust to Love” and “This Town” were bright and vibrant anthems of youth. This 30th Anniversary Edition includes a live performance from the Metro in Boston in 1981 that shows off the band’s rougher edges, their punk roots. Belinda Carlisle is in cheerful voice and guitarists Jane Wiedlin and Charlotte Caffey turn up the distortion and feedback to add an extra growl and bite. They include an enthusiastic cover of the Shangri-La’s “Remember (Walking In the Sand)” and throw in the B-side “Surfing and Spying” into the medley with “Beatnik Beach.” “Cool Jerk,” originally a hit for the Capitols, and “Vacation” are previewed from their next record.
