Groups with guitars have supposedly been on their way out since the days before The Beatles, but New Jersey’s Gaslight Anthem—which have been compared to the state’s ultimate rocker, Bruce Springsteen—continue to wave the banner for guitar-based rock ’n’ roll. While Get Hurt expands the sound with sharp production from producer Mike Crossey (Arctic Monkeys, The 1975), Gaslight Anthem retain the emotional center that makes their songs so compelling. Singer/guitarist Brian Fallon evokes memories of Springsteen and Eddie Vedder at their most sincere. Songs like “Stay Vicious,” “Helter Skeleton,” “Rollin’ and Tumblin’,” and “Ain’t That a Shame” are proud to speak in terms where the singer’s born on the Fourth of July and passion is no ordinary word. “Underneath the Ground” allows for a gentler side that’s no less committed to the cause, where music (especially rock ’n’ roll) saves lives and provides the soundtrack to one’s dreams. The deluxe version adds four songs, including the touching acoustic-based rocker “Mama’s Boys."
