Chicago indie rockers The Fold are perhaps best known for their musical contributions to the Cartoon Network’s Lego Ninjago. Their fourth album, Moving Past, makes the case that the foursome have something to offer beyond TV soundtrack tunes. Over the years, singer/guitarist Daniel Castady and his cohorts have refined their buoyant power pop to a fine edge, bringing to mind everyone from Big Star to Plain White T’s in the process. Lyrically, The Fold have captured a sense of twentysomethings living on the cusp of adult responsibility—a theme present again on Moving Past. “Live Forever” (a thoughtful meditation on mortality set to a chiming track) and the title number (an anthem of acceptance and gratitude with the soaring spirit of ‘80s arena rock) reflect the album’s sobered yet hopeful tone. As usual, Castady and company have plenty to say about relationships, as “Crooked Road” and “Bye Bye Love” show. The acoustic-centered “Love” goes beyond romance to touch higher spiritual chords, reaffirming the band’s connection with Christian pop.
