The lazy way to describe the Ernies self-titled debut album — to say that it's ska — would be an over-simplification because there are songs on the album that definitely don't fit into that category. Their horn-backed songs do stay pretty close to the ska tradition, but several of the tracks on this album journey in a different direction altogether. Instead of the metal/punk-influenced ska from bands like Rancid, when the Ernies do a metal/ska album they alternate metal and ska songs, instead of mashing the two styles together. There is some style-stretching, however, such as the jazzy sax solo on "Viva Costa Rica." There's also some fun-loving funk-swing like their cover of "Inspector 8," but mostly the southern boys pick a style and stick to it until the song fades out. Though not quite as adventurous as their later works, this album provides a good introduction to the Ernies' sound and gives a hint of the creativity to come.
