The Pressed Piano features a selection of instrumental versions of pop hits in which instruments supplant the lead vocals, as with the organ in "30 60 90," or the flute taking the place of a young Michael Jackson in an otherwise faithful rendition of the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back." Except for the occasional backup singers piping in, The Pressed Piano is instrumental most of the way through, making this Duke of Burlington release almost seem like a candidate for the music backgrounds of dentists' offices and shopping malls — until hearing track ten, that is. "L.S.D. (Librae, Solidi, Denarii)" features a moaning, gasping woman in the supposed throes of love through the entire song. The other exception to the no-vocals rule is the closing song, "Lobellia," which features an incessant barrage of "na-na"s taking this track to humorous kitsch heights. Also included on this odd release are two renditions of the Latin pop classic that El Chicano made a soul hit in the '70s, "Viva Tirado."
